A couple of years ago I had a chance to visit a plantation near my family's home in Hertford, North Carolina.
The Leigh House at Land's End Plantation was built in the 1830s by Colonel James Leigh; an officer of the Confederate Army during the American Civil War.
Col. Leigh used sturdy materials and the sturdier backs of slave labor to construct this historical masterpiece.
Just being on the land brought a kind of solemn silence to Natalie and I.
